03 Jan 10 Purchasing A Television Does Not Need To Be Complicated

In the old days, buying a television was pretty simple. You only had two questions to ask yourself. One, how much money do I want to spend and two, how big do I want it. That was pretty much it for most people. Even if you wanted a home theater system, it was just a matter of deciding on how big the TV was going to be.

These days, the questions are a little more complicated because the technology is so much more complicated and changes so quickly, that making a wrong choice can leave you with a product that does not do what you want and is obsolete almost immediately. There are so many choices, not just screen size. What kind of entertainment do you prefer, just television or movies or games. Should you buy a DVD that up converts to 1080p or go for the BluRay. Is the BluRay the Laserdisc of the new century? These are questions that cant even be decided until you pick out a TV.

So should you go with plasma or an LCD or a DLP? Without getting too technical in explaining the scientific differences between the different types of televisions, we will just list the pros and cons without getting very detailed with the inner workings. To answer the question of which type of television is best for you and your family, you have to think about what it will be used for and the types of entertainment that you most enjoy. Plasma has historically had a better contrast ratio factor between the colors, black being a deeper, darker black then on LCD. The plasma also had a clearer picture for fast moving objects which could make a difference in a ghosting type image on LCD. This problem is correcting itself as the refresh rate on LCDs are now as fast as plasma. Generally the prices on the larger LCDs are lower then comparable sized plasmas. LCDs also emit less heat and use less electricity.

In a darker room, plasma will look better. It has more vivid colors. If you will be watching TV in a lighter room, LCD’s work great. This allows the TV to be placed in any room of the house. DLP offers yet another choice. The image of DLPs are made up of tiny mirrors and the picture can be as good as the plasma or the LCD.

The DLP sizes can be much bigger than the plasma and even bigger still than the LCD. For true HD quality on a television under 42 inches, the LCD is the winner. If you are looking for BluRay or true HD in a smaller size, this will be a better choice for cost purposes as well as truest picture quality.
