08 Jan 10 Primary Duties Of A Funeral Director

The primary function of a funeral director is to make all arrangements for the funeral service up to the handling of the dead body at the burial or cremation.

There are four important duties of a funeral director, they are: (a) shifting of the body to the mortuary; (b) embalming and preparing the body for service; (c) arranging for the ceremonies for friends and family to pay their final respects to the departed and; (d) the final act of cremation or burial according to the customs of the family.

The tasks of a funeral director vary from posting obituaries in the print and electronic media to arranging for a hearse to carry the deceased, in addition to other planning tasks like choosing the timings and place for holding the funeral service etc. Besides, funeral directors have to make arrangements for flowers and have the decoration carried out for each ceremony, make provisions for vehicles for the assembled people and clothe the body for the service after anointing it.

A funeral director has a lot of responsibilities besides the ones mentioned above, including doing the paperwork formalities as required. He helps the family secure a death certificate. He also makes preparations to settle any insurance claims, and helps the family members in applying for seniors’ burial benefits. He also aids in transferring pension and annuity money, if any, of the deceased to the dependants of the deceased and assists the family with estimates of the costs of the entire funeral service.

He also has to associate with many people and should coordinate with all of them for successfully performing his tasks. He has to interact with doctors, pastors, casket makers and flower sellers, all with equal ease.

Finally, the funeral directors should be considerate too and should try to provide some comfort to the mourning family and try to help them out of their sorrows over the demise of a loved one. Though it is an important aspect of the profession, some funeral directors tend to ignore it as a peripheral responsibility.
